Tart or sour Halloween candies carry an increased risk for promoting tooth erosion and tooth decay. Parents should take extra precautions to monitor Halloween candies for their children as well as to avoid giving them to children who come as Trick-or-Treaters.
This Halloween there is more to be scared of than ghoulish
costumes. What can be terrifying to your child’s teeth is sour
acid candy! These candies come in many varieties and forms:
hard and soft, chewy candies, powdered candies and gums,
sour gels and sprays, crystals, cotton candy and chewing
gums. They contain strong food acids that have been known
to erode the surface of the teeth. Many parents consider these
candies safer because they may contain less sugar, but what
you don’t know is the acid content approaches the pH level of
battery acid.
The growing popularity of these candies has raised concern among dental professionals due to the potential
erosion of the tooth surface. Dental erosion can cause wear to the tooth surface in the form of craters on cusp
tips to thinning of the flat surfaces. When the pH of the mouth drops below 5.5, the tooth surface more prone to
tooth erosion and tooth decay. Other problems such as tooth sensitivity and staining can also develop.
Irritation of the soft tissues of the mouth is common with sour candies and some candies contain warning labels
to this effect.
The following tips are recommended to make Halloween safe for children’s teeth:
Do not purchase sour candies for Trick-or-Treaters
Search your child’s candy sack and remove sour acid candies. Replace these candies with a small piece of
sugarless gum or candy, sticker or small prize.
Xylitol gum is the best; it actually REDUCES and HEALS cavities
If you absolutely need to ear sour candies, do so at meal time vs. in-between meals.
After eating sour candies, rinse your mouth with water immediately. This will help to neutralize the oral
cavity.
Do not brush your teeth immediately after eating these sour candies, wait at least 30 minutes.

Majority of Dogs, Cats over Age 2 in U.S. Have Some Form of Dental Disease: Vets

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Canadian Press) -- Dogs have 42 teeth, humans have 32, cats have 30 and Mario has none.

The cat was eating poorly, hiding in the closet, and had red, sore gums when he was diagnosed with a mouth infection called stomatitis. Three surgeries and $10,000 later, all his teeth had been pulled.

"Once he started feeling better, he again became a happy, normal, healthy cat, very loving, affectionate and playful," said Mary Roever of Green Bay, Wis., who with her husband adopted Mario from a shelter. "His cheek appears ever so slightly sunken in, but you really have to look to see it."

The American Veterinary Medical Association estimates that by age two, 80 per cent of dogs and 70 per cent of cats have some form of dental disease. Infections have been linked to diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease and other life- threatening problems.

Dental disease was the most common problem found among the 2.2 million dogs and 450,000 cats treated at Banfield Pet Hospitals in 2010, according to the group's "State of Pet Health 2011 Report." With 770 hospitals in 43 states, Banfield is the world's largest general vet practice.

It can be hard to tell if your dog or cat has a toothache, but there are warning signs, said Dr. Kevin S. Stepaniuk, president-elect of the American Veterinary Dental Society, and assistant clinical professor and veterinary dentist at the University of Minnesota's College of Veterinary Medicine.

Bad breath, loose or discoloured teeth, cowering if touched on the jaw or snout, drooling, dropping food, bleeding from the gums, loss of appetite and loss of weight are some signs, Stepaniuk said.

Pets might also paw at their mouth and make exaggerated jaw movements when eating or drinking, he said.

"It hurts and it's very smelly," said veterinarian Edgardo Ortiz, Banfield's medical director for New York and New Jersey. "When the pets are healthy, owners will kiss them. With severe tooth trouble, people don't want to kiss their pets so they don't get as much love. That's reality."

Mario's symptoms even included a squeaky meow, though it returned to normal after his surgery. Still, there are a few things the toothless cat can't do, Roever said: "He has no teeth to pick things up with. We pile his canned food up into a mountain so it's easier for him to eat." She also buys extra-small kibble.

He will ignore furry toys and go for smooth, cloth-covered ones instead, she said. "I suspect the furry cloth feels funny on the gums."

Tooth decay can happen at any age, but is more likely in older pets and in smaller toy breeds. "They eat more canned food and more will get stuck in their teeth," Ortiz said. Larger dogs tend to eat more dry food, which scrapes the teeth, and helps remove tartar, he said.

"Ask yourself the question: 'If you did not brush your teeth daily, what would happen?' In a few days you would have significant plaque and, within a few more, increased tartar," Stepaniuk said.

Owners are advised to take their pets to the vet twice a year for routine checkups and get their teeth cleaned once a year.

In a perfect world, Ortiz said pet owners would brush their dog's or cat's teeth twice a day, but twice a week will produce amazing results.

Add dental chews and a water additive that helps prevent tartar and pets should stay very kissable, Ortiz said.

Brushing an older pet's teeth for the first time can prove challenging, the vets acknowledged, but it is easy to teach a puppy or kitten to learn to like it, Ortiz said.

"Start with your bare finger and rub it along their gums and teeth. Get them used to having something in their mouth. Then get a finger-sized toothbrush with small fibres that do not scrape the teeth," he said. Toothpaste isn't necessary to remove tartar, but once the pet is used to the brush, it can be added.

Cats usually won't sit still for too long, so it helps if the toothpaste is tuna or chicken-flavoured, Ortiz said.

Stepaniuk warned not to give pets human toothpaste. "If human toothpaste is swallowed, which pets will do, it is toxic (due to the high levels of fluoride) as well as a gastrointestinal irritant," he said.

Any invasive dental work on pets -- extractions, root canals, and any thorough exam involving instruments and X-rays -- requires anesthesia, Stepaniuk said. There are no such things as dog dentures, he said, and implants and bridges are almost non-existent, but some dogs -- usually show dogs -- do get braces.

Pets do cope with the loss of teeth, Ortiz said, and their health and behaviour typically improve once the pain is gone.

Veterinarians will try to save strategic teeth when possible. These include the canine teeth and carnassial teeth (the big chewing teeth), Stepaniuk said.

Other types of pets are also vulnerable to dental problems. Ferrets can get tooth decay just like dogs and cats. Rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas have continually growing cheek teeth and incisors; given the wrong diet, their teeth will overgrow and cause abscessed teeth, Stepaniuk said. Reptiles have teeth and without proper husbandry, they too can get severe infection and stomatitis.

Keeping Healthy -- Even to How Dentures Fit -- Can Lower Dementia Risk: Study

TORONTO (Canadian Press) -- Health factors considered outside the box when it comes to the risk of getting Alzheimer's or another dementia -- including whether a person's dentures fit properly or they suffer from poor eyesight or hearing -- may in fact contribute to development of the brain disorders, researchers say.

"Our study suggests that rather than just paying attention to already known risk factors for dementia, such as diabetes or heart disease, keeping up with your general health may help reduce the risk for dementia," said principal investigator Dr. Kenneth Rockwood of Dalhousie University.

Rockwood, director of geriatric medicine research, said that an individual health issue like ill-fitting dentures does not raise the risk of dementia in those who are predisposed to the brain-destroying condition.

"We know, for example, that dentures on their own are not associated with an adverse outcome," Rockwood said Wednesday from Halifax. "It's just when they're in combination with a whole bunch of other things that are wrong. That state of having many things wrong is associated with adverse outcomes."

The research, published in this week's edition of the journal Neurology, found that each health problem increased a person's odds of developing dementia by 3.2 per cent, compared with people without such health issues.

The research included 7,239 people, age 65-plus and free of dementia, who took part in the Canadian Study of Health and Aging. Participants were assessed for Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia at five and then 10 years and asked about 19 health problems not previously reported to predict dementia.

Those problems included arthritis, trouble hearing or seeing, denture fit, chest or skin problems, stomach or bladder troubles, sinus issues, broken bones and feet or ankle conditions, among others.

After 10 years, almost 3,000 had died, about 880 were cognitively healthy, while more than 600 had Alzheimer's disease or another dementia. Close to 700 had cognitive problems but no dementia, and the cognitive status of the roughly 1,000 other subjects was not clear.

The results showed that older people without health problems at initial assessment had an 18 per cent chance of developing dementia in 10 years, while the risk rose to 30 per cent for those with eight health problems, and 40 per cent among those with 12.

"The point is that anything that's bad for you is ultimately bad for your brain," explained Rockwood. "And in someone so predisposed, the cumulative effect of that is likely to increase the dementia risk."

That's because the brain and body are intimately interconnected -- so any physical health problem can affect the cognitive organ.

"Our work joins a body of work that shows the brain is not an innocent bystander," he said. "The brain fights back."

That defensive healing mechanism -- what Rockwood calls an "aberrant repair process" -- is believed to set in motion an immune inflammatory response that might possibly result in the tangled brain plaques and other neuron-destroying effects seen in Alzheimer's.

The ability of the brain to rewire its circuitry to overcome deficits -- for instance, developing a new speech pathway after a stroke -- is also part of this repair process, he said.

"So people with poor neurocompensation and more harmful than good neuroinflammatory response will be at the greatest risk (of developing dementia)."

In an accompanying editorial, Dr. Jean Francois Dartigues of the National Institute of Health and Medical Research in Paris said more research needs to be done to confirm whether these non-traditional health problems may indeed be linked to an increased risk of dementia.

"But if confirmed, the consequences of these findings could be significant and could lead to the development of preventive or curative strategies for Alzheimer's disease," Dartigues wrote.

INTELIHEALTH -- Women with periodontal disease who get treatment during their pregnancy have lower risks of giving birth too soon or having a very small baby.
That was the conclusion of a review of 10 published studies in this area. Australian researchers did the review.
A total of 5,645 pregnant women were involved. All of them had periodontal disease. The studies compared those who received periodontal treatment during pregnancy with those who did not. The studies looked at one or more of these pregnancy problems:
• Premature (early) birth (before 37 weeks of pregnancy)
• Low birth weight (under 2.5 kilograms, or about 5.5 pounds)
• Stillbirth
All 10 trials looked at premature birth. The researchers combined all of the results. They found that periodontal treatment reduced the odds of having a premature baby by 65%.
Seven trials looked at low birth weight babies. Periodontal treatment reduced the odds of having a low birth weight baby by almost half.
Women who were otherwise at low risk of having an early birth or a very small baby appeared to benefit more from periodontal treatment. Among these women, treatment reduced the risk of both pregnancy problems by 65%.
Eight studies looked at stillbirth. Periodontal treatment did not affect the odds having a stillbirth for this group of studies. But researchers also took a look just at the studies with at least 500 women enrolled. In these larger studies, they did find an effect. Periodontal treatment reduced the odds of stillbirth by almost half.
Hormonal changes can affect the mouth. For this reason, women are at higher risk for gingivitis and periodontal disease during pregnancy.
Why would periodontal treatment reduce the risks of pregnancy problems? Researchers have several theories.
Treatment reduces the number of bacteria in the mouth. This lowers the chances of bacteria getting into the blood. Once bacteria are in the blood, they can infect other areas of the body, including the genital area and placenta.
Another possibility is that having fewer bacteria in the mouth will lessen the body's immune response to these bacteria. The immune response can produce molecules that are linked with labor and premature birth. Some of these molecules also can restrict blood flow to the placenta. This can hamper growth and lead to a low birth weight baby.
The study appears in the June issue of the International Journal of Evidence-Based Health Care.

Gum: A Stick A Day May Keep The Dentist Away

You've seen the claims on sugarless gum wrappers. Packages of Orbit say the chewing gum helps strengthen the teeth. And a package of Trident gum containing xylitol says it helps prevent cavities. So are these claims solid?

"You know, it depends on how much of the active agent is in that product," says Francisco Ramos-Gomez, a pediatric dentist at U.C.L.A. "And how much you chew per day."

Oral health experts say the popularity of sugar-free gums has been one step in the improvement of children's oral health. Since consuming lots of sucrose — or table sugar — can lead to cavities, there's a benefit simply in taking it out of gum.

One Step Further

Gum makers have gone one step further by adding ingredients such as the natural sweetener xylitol. That means there's potentially even more of a benefit.

"Xylitol is an anti-microbial — so it's acting against the bacteria themselves," says Peter Milgrom, a dentist at the University of Washington. "So it helps prevent tooth decay."

It's important to note that studies suggest that sugarless gums made of another sugar substitute, called sorbitol, do not seem to have the same preventive effect.

Milgrom and his colleagues have studied how much xylitol is needed to actually knock out bacteria and prevent cavities. And he has two pieces of advice. First: Read the ingredient list on the gum package. If xylitol is the first ingredient, then there's probably enough of it to be effective. And second: Chew a lot of it.

"You have to chew at least two pieces, three times a day to have an effect," says Milgrom.

This may sound like an inordinate amount of chewing, but in Finland kids have really gotten used to it. The Finns have been chewing xylitol gum for years as part of a public health initiative to reduce cavities. And Finnish researchers have documented a preventive effect in numerous studies going back to the early 1970s at the University of Turku. Throughout Scandinavia, xylitol products are widely available, from lozenges and toothpastes to chocolate and candy gummy bears, says Ramos-Gomez.

Too Young To Chew Gum?

For kids who are too young to chew gum or for families that don't have access to good preventive care, there may be another option: daily doses of a xylitol syrup. Milgrom has just published the results of a recent experiment with children in the Marshall Islands who were given a strawberry-flavored syrup for about 10 months.

"The mothers just broke off the end of the squishy plastic tube and squirted it in their child's teeth," explains Milgrom. His team documented a 50 to 70 percent reduction in the development of cavities. The children who were given the highest doses of the syrup saw the greatest benefit.

Pediatric dentists say it's important to remember that xylitol is not a magic bullet in fighting tooth decay. Parents need to stay on top of all the other known prevention methods.

"Control of the diet, regular use of fluoride toothpaste and good ongoing supervision by a dentist are all important," says Burton Edelstein of the College of Dental Medicine at Columbia University. And, of course, so are daily nudges to remind your kids to brush.

There's also indirect evidence to support the claim that gums that have sorbitol, like Orbit, can help fight cavities by strengthening teeth, says Edelstein. It's a claim accepted by the American Dental Association.

"Sorbitol can increase saliva flow, which secondarily strengthens teeth," explains Edelstein. And at the same time, sorbitol is not sugar, so it doesn't cause the bacteria to produce that acid than can lead to cavities. But Edelstein says he's not aware of any studies that directly show that sorbitol-based chewing gums can directly strengthen the teeth.

INTELIHEALTH - A German study gives new meaning to the term "pillow talk."
In this case, the pillow is used in the dental treatment chair. It broadcasts relaxation hypnosis promoting instructions and soothing music into the ears of the person in the chair. The pillow with music and spoken words used a form of relaxation therapy that is often referred to as hypnotherapy. That relaxation music pillow had an iPod shuffle inserted into it. The music that was played was Johan Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major. This music has a rhythm of 60 beats per minute. It was used to help slow and synchronize the patient’s heart rate and breathing.
Many dental offices already provide soothing music or encourage patients to bring their own.
Researchers used the pillow in a study of 82 people who were having dental implant surgery. The average age of the patients was 51 years. In the surgery, metal posts are placed in the jaw. They hold crowns, bridges or dentures that replace natural teeth.
The people who used the pillow were less anxious during and after the surgery. They also had lower blood pressure and heart rates during the surgery. In the group that did not use the pillow, these measures increased.
The study appears in the April issue of the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis.

Foods good for your teeth

1. Sugar-Free Gum: Though most chewing gum is a sticky, sugary dental disaster, sugar-free brands containing the natural sweetener xylitol can improve dental health. The bacteria that contribute to tooth decay, Streptococcus mutans, feed on the sucrose--the sugar--that we eat. As they multiply, the bacteria release acids that lead to tooth decay, But bacteria can't digest xylitol, so they can't multiply or release the decay-causing acids. Xylitol also increases saliva and its pH level, which helps remineralize tooth enamel and fight plaque buildup,

Health food stores typically carry the gum or mints sweetened with enough xylitol to be effective. Experts suggest consuming a daily minimum of four grams of xylitol-sweetened mints or gum, preferably immediately after meals and snacks.

2. Brewed Tea: Drinking green or black tea may provide protection from several diseases, including dental cavities. Though scientists know that tea delivers naturally occurring fluoride to the mouth, they are still determining the most beneficial amounts and types of tea to drink to attain additional benefits. For example, University of Illinois at Chicago researchers found that chemical components in black tea called polyphenols inhibit the growth of glucosyltransferase, an enzyme that helps plaque adhere to tooth enamel. Tea's anti-bacterial properties also help prevent plaque from forming and weakens existing plaque and bacteria.

3. Tap Water: If your primary source of water comes from bottled or highly filtered water, you may be missing out on the protective effects of fluoridated water. According to the American Dental Association, the majority of bottled waters on the market don't contain enough fluoride to be beneficial to oral health. Further, some types of water treatment systems in homes can reduce fluoride content, potentially erasing the decay-preventing benefits of the mineral. Water in any form is kinder to your teeth, and waistline, than sugary sodas, sports drinks and many sweetened fruit juices. "The fluoridation of community water supplies helped to significantly reduce tooth decay, so it's important not to entirely abandon that source of fluoride," says Samuel H. Gruenbaum, President and Chief Executive Officer of Western Dental, a California-based company with 250 dental offices.

4. Cheese: Having cheese for dessert could be good for you. A growing body of evidence shows that consuming cheese, particularly at the end of a meal, could help prevent tooth decay and help repair tooth surfaces. Research indicates that cheese may reduce enamel demineralization, neutralize acids formed in plaque and, through increased saliva flow, flush away sugars.

5. Raw Vegetables: Sometimes called "nature's toothbrush," crunchy, crispy fresh fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apples and cucumbers help protect teeth by stimulating the gums and boosting the production of saliva, which helps flush away sugars and food particles. Fibrous, fresh fruits and vegetables help reduce the buildup of cavity-causing plaque and help neutralize saliva before it can erode dental enamel. In addition, carrots, spinach, tomatoes, broccoli and cantaloupe contain beta carotene and Vitamin C, which are essential to healthy teeth and gums.

March has arrived, and that can only mean one thing: it’s National Nutrition Month. Every March, the Levy Dental team and thousands of dentists and hygienists celebrate this occasion, and this year is no different. This March, our team wants you to think diabetes, obesity and periodontal disease, and how healthful eating and physical activity may improve periodontal health.

Small changes really can make a big difference, and the American Dietetic Association (ADA) has some advice on ways to start improving your diet this March:

• Focus on fruits and vegetables: Add a serving each day to one meal and increase it every few weeks. Adding more of these foods into your diet is important whether you buy frozen, fresh or organic.

• Think fresh, think local: From farmer’s markets to community-supported agriculture, you have many options to find new, fresh foods in the New Haven community.

• Make each and every calorie count: When you are choosing between options, focus instead on the one with more of the vitamins and nutrients that you need. Sometimes, foods with fewer calories aren’t always the healthiest options.
• It’s tempting, but…: If you have a sweet tooth, have fruit and yogurt for dessert. If you crave a snack in the afternoon, enjoy some trail mix or nuts.

• Expand your horizons: Try a fish you’ve never eaten before or find a new vegetable recipe. By testing yourself, you might find new healthy favorites to add to your regular grocery list.

A Few Breath Freshening Tips

We at Levy Dental know that many of our patients are concerned about bad breath, or halitosis. While some cases of bad breath are persistent (chronic bad breath), generally bad breath is transient, and can be prevented.

We recently came across this helpful video about bad breath and thought it was worth sharing with our patients. The video explains what might cause bad breath and some ways that it can be avoided. In most instances, bad breath can be prevented by practicing common oral hygiene techniques that you have probably heard us emphasize during a visit to our New Haven dental office, such as brushing and flossing daily. Foods for Healthy Gums and Healthy Hearts

Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, is far more common than you may think in America. Every year, new studies begin to link the effect gum disease can have on the heart, and we at Levy Dental Group have been helping spread the word! When is thumb-sucking a cause for worry?

Some patients have asked us about whether it’s healthy for children to suck thumbs (or, less frequently, fingers). If you’ve got a thumb-sucker in the house, you are not alone. Research tells us that between 75% and 95% of infants suck their thumbs.

Is this anything to worry about? In most cases, probably not. Sucking is a natural reflex for an infant, and can provide security and contentment as well as relaxation for your little one. It’s a habit that most kids grow out of between the ages of two and four.

However, if your child keeps sucking after he’s gotten his permanent teeth, it’s time to take a closer look. If your child sucks his thumb aggressively, putting pressure on the inside of his mouth or his teeth, it could cause problems with tooth alignment and proper mouth growth. If you’re worried, give us a call and we will help assess the situation, and provide tips for how to help your child break the habit.

Understand that you are not alone
There are many people out there that are afraid of visiting the dentist for various reasons.

Identify your fears
Sit down and write down everything that makes you nervous about going to the dentist. Once you have them written down, scan your list and think about some ways you might be able to overcome them.

Discuss your fears with your Doctor
After making a list, bring it in or simply remember what you wrote down and talk about them with us! We take these issues very seriously and by discussing any reservations or concerns with you, we can work toward providing a more comfortable dental experience.

Avoiding dental treatment will only increase your fears
By avoiding dental treatment you run the risk of requiring more serious dental treatment. By regularly visiting the dentist, you will rest easier knowing that you are keeping your teeth healthy.

A New Study suggests the oral symptoms from drugs for heart conditions

Heart Patients Have Oral Symptoms

INTELIHEALTH - People who take multiple drugs for health conditions may be more likely to notice effects on saliva or taste, a study concludes.
The study involved 531 people who visited a cardiology clinic in Saudi Arabia. About 14% of them had at least one oral symptom, including:
• Dry mouth (8%)
• White or grey patches in the mouth (4%)
• Problems involving the sense of taste (2%)
For most people, these conditions were not bothersome.
Dry mouth was more common in women, and in people with diabetes.
No specific heart drug was linked with any of the three conditions in this study. But the researchers did find that people who took multiple drugs — including drugs for non-heart-related conditions — were more likely to have mouth-related symptoms.
Many drugs for heart conditions can have effects in the mouth. For example, some drugs for high blood pressure or congestive heart failure can cause dry mouth. Dentists call this condition xerostomia. Dry mouth can increase the risk of tooth decay. Experts recommend that people give their dentist a list of the drugs they are taking, and their doses.

Cold and Flu Season is Here- Replace Your Toothbrush!

Fall is here, and with it the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs can linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing
• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen
• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster
• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!

A Word About The State Street Bridge Closure

If you've been by our office in the past few days, you may have noticed the recent closure of the State Street Bridge spanning the Mill River. The bridge, dating back to 1920, has deteriorated enough to need replacement, and construction is scheduled to complete on the new bridge by 2012. The closure of the bridge means you will need to take an alternate route to our office and other businesses around us if coming from the south traveling on I91 North. As a result, there is a short detour along James and Humphrey street to get across the river. Humphrey meets State street, and you can take an immediate right into our office parking lot. Gum Disease Can Sneak Up On You

It’s easy to tell when you have a cavity; but unfortunately, gum disease can exist in your mouth without you even knowing. In fact, you can have the beginning stages of gum disease without noticing any pain or discomfort. Since gum disease can be undetectable, it’s important to watch for warning signs in order to prevent the disease from worsening!

Signs to watch for:

Celebrating the National Dental Hygiene Month

Would you believe it's already October? For our staff, October means one thing: National Dental Hygiene Month. This month, we join the American Dental Hygienists' Association in spreading the word that good dental habits are easy to develop and even easier to maintain.

Here are a few tips to help you build good oral hygiene habits this month:

* Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two to three minutes. Make sure to get the outer and inner surfaces and the chewing surfaces of each tooth.

* Floss once a day to remove plaque from between teeth. Help children learn healthy flossing habits so when they're capable, they know how to do it properly.

* Visit us on a regular basis. Children should start seeing a dentist within six months of getting their first tooth.

* Ask us what toothpaste family members should use. Remember that not all toothpaste is appropriate for all ages.

* Eat a healthy diet, rich in fruit and veggies. Avoid sugary foods and eat a high fiber diet of fruits and veggies such as apples and carrots to help prevent tooth decay.

Your teeth are an important part of your body, and keeping them clean helps keep your mouth and your body healthy. By taking care of your teeth, eating a balanced diet, and visiting our convenient New Haven office on a regular basis, you can have healthy teeth and an attractive smile throughout your entire life.

In honor of Baby Safety Month, we would like to encourage all of our patients and their families to become educated on the importance of childproofing your home. Your child’s health and safety is of the utmost importance to our team at Levy Dental Group, which is why we would like to remind all of our patients to be mindful of some of the common hazards that may be in your home.

Children are vulnerable, and it is important that you take the necessary precautions in your kitchen, bathroom, nursery, and around the home to minimize the risk to your baby. For example, never leave poisons or toxic materials under the sink where they can be easily reached by a child. In the bathroom, remember to remove soaps, razors, and shampoos from the edge of the tub and close the toilet lid. Children are naturally curious, so it is necessary that you cover all electrical outlets, keep all trash containers locked, and ensure that hanging cords from phones, lamps, and appliances are kept out of reach.

September is National Gum Care Month

Gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease, can be difficult to recognize. Many people do not recognize the warning signs- bleeding and swollen gums, as a precursor to gum disease. This month a national campaign is underway to raise awareness about gum health and periodontal disease, and we at the Levy Dental Group wanted to do our part to help spread the word!

Early recognition and action are the most important steps to health gums, and ultimately a health body too! Studies are published every year linking oral health, including the gums, to the health of other areas of the body, such the heart. One of the most important steps to improving the care of your gums is recognizing the warning signs for gum disease. These can include:

• Gums that feel tender
• Gums that bleed easily (during brushing or flossing)
• Gums that recede or pull away from the teeth

Omega-3 may combat mouth bacteria, boost oral health

Recently, an article was published on the dental health benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids of marine and plant origin. A new study from the University of Kentucky reveals that all types of food-borne omega-3 fats (like tuna, walnuts and spinach) cut the numbers of oral disease bacteria by half or more.

The study found that "the dental health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids of marine and plant origin have been found to have strong anti-bacterial activity against a range of oral pathogens and "may include anti-bacterial effects, extending the benefits beyond inflammation." The doctors involved in the study said that they planned to conduct further studies needed to prove that omega-3s acids work to benefit oral health. While this is encouraging news, we wanted to remind you that diet, hygiene, and other factors, are key to improving your oral health. Bottled Water May Be Behind Tooth Troubles

We at the Levy Dental Group want you to know that as more families turn to bottled water and away from the tap, they may be missing out on one important ingredient that most brands of bottled water fail to include: fluoride!

As of 2005, bottled water is second only to soft drinks as the most popular drink in the United States, beating out milk, juice, and – more significantly – tap water. Between 2001 and 2006, the amount of bottled water sold in the U.S. rose an average of 10% per year. And many dental health specialists point to bottled water’s increased popularity as the culprit behind rising rates of cavities.

Because fluoride helps strengthen teeth, it is an important component of maintaining good oral health. The benefits of fluoride were noticed in the early part of the twentieth century, when researchers found communities with low levels of tooth decay. It turned out that these towns had measurable levels (around 1 part per million) of fluoride in their drinking water.

Beginning in the 1940s, communities have fluoridated their water supplies, and dentists have seen a significant decline in cavities ever since. The American Dental Association endorses both community water fluoridation and the use of fluoride-containing products as a safe means of preventing tooth decay. Between tap water and toothpaste, most of us get sufficient amounts of fluoride.

But if your family avoids fluoridated tap water in favor of ever-more-popular bottled water, you could be missing out on the levels of fluoride necessary to make a difference in your oral health.

If bottled water is your water of choice, check the label to make sure that your brand contains fluoride. As of a 2006 decision, the FDA allows bottled water containing .6 to 1.0 milligrams per liter of fluoride to carry a label stating that fluoridated water may reduce the risk of dental cavities or tooth decay. The ADA has backed this decision.

Of course, simply drinking fluoridated water is not a magic ticket to perfect teeth. To keep your choppers in tip-top shape, it’s important to brush and floss daily and avoid sugary sweets, in addition to maintaining your fluoride intake and visiting us at Levy Dental Group regularly.

Ask Levy Dental Group: What’s so bad about nail biting?

We’ve all heard that biting your nails is an awful habit, but you many wonder- really- what’s so bad about it? Recently, our team at The Levy Dental Group found an interesting article that discusses how biting your nails affect your teeth and oral health.

Nail biting, also known as Onychophagia, is a common habit among various age groups, including primarily children, teens and young adults. Nail biting is generally triggered by stress and most often decreases with age. That being said, nail biting is unsanitary, unattractive, as well as unhealthy for your teeth!

Here’s why:

• It’s unsanitary. Your nails are dirty, almost twice as dirty as your fingers! Hence, biting your nails is just asking for germs and bacteria.

Smile wider, live longer, from Levy Dental Group

Folks with big smiles may actually live than those who don’t, according to a March 2010 study at Michigan’s Wayne State University. We've known for quite some time that positive emotion has been linked to both physical and mental health, but researchers at the university did something quite interesting: they looked at photos of 230 ball-players who began their careers in baseball prior to 1950 and studied their smile intensity (ranging from big smile, no smile or partial smile). The players' smile ratings were compared with data from deaths that occurred from 2006 through 2009. The researchers then took into account other factors that impact life longevity, including body mass index, career length and even college attendance.

The results? Researchers found that players who weren't smiling in the photos died at the average age of 72.9 years. Players with partial smiles lived to be 75. Those with big smiles, however, lived on average to be 79.9 years old.

After Heart Attack, Periodontal Problems Risky

INTELIHEALTH - Periodontal disease may increase the risk of heart-related problems in people who already have had a heart attack.

Researchers from the State University of New York, Buffalo, did the study. It included nearly 900 people. All had survived a heart attack. They were followed for seven years. During that time, 154 of them had another heart-related problem. The problems included another heart attack, a stroke, angina or heart failure. Some people died.

The researchers compared nonsmokers with and without periodontal disease. They found differences between women and men with periodontal disease. Women were more likely than men to have a second heart-related problem. Overall, men and women with periodontal disease were 43% more likely to have new heart-related problems than people without the disease.

This group of researchers has done similar studies. In 2007, they looked to see if periodontal disease was linked with heart attack. They studied 574 people who had survived a heart attack. They compared them with 887 people who had not had a heart attack. Nonsmokers with periodontal disease had a 40% higher risk of heart attack. Smokers had a 50% higher risk.

Studies also have linked periodontal disease with risks for artery disease, heart disease and stroke.

The new study appears in the April issue of the Journal of Periodontology.

If you are participating in sports, you need to protect your teeth. Here at Levy Dental Group we provide mouth guards to wear during sports. Take it from me, when I was playing high school soccer I was knocked in my mouth pretty hard and I was not wearing my mouth guard. Because of that hit I needed two root canals and four veneers. If you are participating in sports and you would like to keep your teeth wear a mouth guard it is that simple.

The amount of acid and sugar found in a can of soda can cause serious tooth decay and lead to plenty of oral health problems, including cavities, gum disease, and even tooth loss! We at Levy Dental found an interesting article that helps explain why soft drinks are so problematic for oral health, and how to help cut back! It's called "pop" in the Midwest and most of Canada. It's "soda" in the Northeast. And it goes by a well-known brand name in much of the South.
People across North America use different words to identify a sugary, carbonated soft drink. But however they say it, they're talking about something that can cause serious oral health problems.
Soft drinks have emerged as one of the most significant dietary sources of tooth decay, affecting people of all ages. Acids and acidic sugar byproducts in soft drinks soften tooth enamel, contributing to the formation of cavities. In extreme cases, softer enamel combined with improper brushing, grinding of the teeth or other conditions can lead to tooth loss.
Sugar-free drinks, which account for only 14 percent of all soft drink consumption, are less harmful¹. However, they are acidic and potentially can still cause problems.

We're Drinking More and More
Soft drink consumption in the United States has increased dramatically across all demographic groups, especially among children and teenagers. The problem is so severe that health authorities such as the American Academy of Pediatrics have begun sounding the alarm about the dangers.
How many school age children drink soft drinks? Estimates range from one in two to more than four in five consuming at least one soft drink a day. At least one in five kids consumes a minimum of four servings a day.²
Some teenagers drink as many as 12 soft drinks a day³.
Larger serving sizes make the problem worse. From 6.5 ounces in the 1950s, the typical soft drink had grown to up to 20 ounces by the 1990s.
Children and adolescents aren't the only people at risk. Long-term consumption of soft drinks has a cumulative effect on tooth enamel. As people live longer, more will be likely to experience problems.
What to Do
Children, adolescents and adults can all benefit from reducing the number of soft drinks they consume, as well as from available oral care therapies. Here are some steps you can take:
Substitute different drinks: Stock the refrigerator with beverages containing less sugar and acid such as water, milk and 100 percent fruit juice. Drink them yourself and encourage your kids to do the same.
Rinse with water: After consuming a soft drink, flush your mouth with water to remove vestiges of the drink that can prolong exposure of tooth enamel to acids.
Use fluoride toothpaste and mouth rinse: Fluoride reduces cavities and strengthens tooth enamel, so brush with a fluoride-containing toothpaste such as Colgate® Total®. Rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash also can help. Your dentist can recommend an over-the-counter mouthwash or prescribe a stronger one depending on the severity of the condition. He or she also can prescribe a higher fluoride toothpaste.
Get professionally applied fluoride treatment: Your dental hygienist can apply fluoride in the form of a foam, gel or rinse.
Soft drinks are hard on your teeth. By reducing the amount you drink, practicing good oral hygiene, and seeking help from your dentist and hygienist, you can counteract their effect and enjoy better oral health.

Keeping Up with Regular Dental Checkups, Rain or Shine

As the spring and summer months approach, excitement fills the air. People are out again enjoying the activities that accompany the beautiful weather. Unfortunately there is a downfall to this time of year, as it becomes more likely for our patients to delay or cancel their treatment at the Levy Dental Group. It then becomes more likely that we will see an increase in patients who are in crisis situations.

For example, a patient who is scheduled for a three surface filling on one of their molars. The patient continuously cancels their appointments throughout the spring and summer months. eventually, months later the patient is in pain and needs to be seen for an emergency visit. What once was a tooth that had decay that only required a filling now has violated the nerve and is causing the patient significant pain.

Now a more extensive and expensive treatment will be required. This is an example of situations that are more common during the warmer seasons and why it is imperative to stress to our patients the importance of maintaining their oral health with their restorative appointments. Making sure they understand that there can be consequences to delaying or canceling their appointments. Therefore patient education is the best way to prevent the increase in patients delaying or canceling their treatment in the spring and summer months. With this information, we hope to find that the crisis patient will become the committed patient!

Low B Vitamins May Up Risk for Canker Sores

INTELIHEALTH - People with canker sores have much lower intake of vitamin B12 and folate than average, a study concludes.

Researchers at the University of Connecticut collected diet information on 100 people who had a history of canker sores. They compared this group of people to a national survey of more than 9,000 people. These people had completed a diet history, but did not have canker sores.

The canker sore group had much lower intakes of vitamin B12 and folate than the nationwide group without canker sores. Other studies have found vitamin B12 or folate deficiencies in some people with canker sores. In at least one study, people were treated for these deficiencies. Their canker sores either got smaller or disappeared altogether.

Canker sores are painful, open sores in the mouth. They are not the same as cold sores. Cold sores are caused by a virus. Canker sores have no clear cause, but most experts agree that some sort of nutritional deficiency contributes to them.
Vitamin B12 also is called cobalamin. One result of low vitamin B12 is megaloblastic anemia. People with anemia have lower-than-normal numbers of red blood cells. People who don't get enough B12 also may have problems with sleep or concentration. They may feel tired, irritable or depressed.

Folate, or folic acid, also is called vitamin B9. It is important for many body functions. However, it is probably best known for its effects on fetal development. Pregnant women who do not get enough folate have a higher risk of having babies with neural tube defects, such as spina bifida.

The study appears in the February 7 issue of the Journal of Oral Pathology & Medicine

A native of the New Haven area, Dr. John S. Levy has provided dental care to the New Haven area residents since 1976. An innovative leader in the dental community, Dr. Levy has been featured and has been quoted in newspapers and magazines, and has authored numerous dental articles.

Attending continuing education courses each year enables Dr. Levy to provide the best care and service and to keep up with the latest advances in dentistry . He is certified in cosmetic and esthetic dentistry, placement and restoration of implants, and advanced endodontics. He lives in Woodbridge with his wife, Beverly. Their daughter, Perri, lives in West Haven.

Dr. Stephen T. Stanley, who has been a member of the Levy Dental Group for the past 12 years, had a strong background in community-based dentistry having spent time living in Freeport, Grand Bahamas, working for the Bahamian Government in a community-based dental clinic. It was there that Dr' Stanley gained his appreciation for treating children. Dr. Stanley and his wife, Myra, reside in New Haven with their two children Stephen, II and Lauryn.

Dr. Michael Wiener, well-known among apprehensive patients for his light touch and gentle bedside manner, has practiced periodontics and implantology since 1995. State-of-the-art technology is key to the high quality of care and services Dr. Wiener provides. Dr. Wiener is committed to helping patients attain oral health with an improved appearance and quality of life.
